Description

Generally, NVR setup steps can be divided into: HDD installation, Startup, Initialize HDD, Add cameras, Record schedule setup, Start recording. This is usually how an NVR works. However, sometimes when you want to check the playback or record file, you find nothing recorded or get an error, which may be that you are encountering the record fail issue. The causes of the issue may be: storage issues, network issues or software configuration. Please check the figure below:

NVR record fail causes

Though record fail is the main issue, it’ll also put us in different situations, let’s check them one by one.

Cause

1. Storage issues

2. Network issues

3. Software configuration

1. Storage issues

The record data is all stored on the hard disks. If the NVR can power on normally, then we need to turn to the hard disk checking.

1.1 Check hard disk status

Go to Status-Disk Status page, check Hard disk current status:

HDD status

lIf the status is abnormal (offline or error), please check the hardware connection (for HDD).

HDD offline

HDD error

For this situation you can try to re-plug the SATA cable, or exchange the cable/port to locate the issue. Also you can replace another HDD for testing.

HDD hardware connection

lIf you configured an NAS storage device, please make sure the NAS server is online,

and the NVR has the permission to access the shared file.

lIf you install the HDD for the first time, it’ll request to initialize the HDD first, click to start , please note that NVR will format the HDD during the process.

HDD uninitialized

lIf you upgrade NVR firmware from 7x.8.0.xx to 7x.9.0.xx, the file system will be changed, it’ll also request to format HDD, please back up record before upgrading.

1.2 Check free storage space

When the NVR runs out of storage, the record will stop if the setting is not correct.

Please check if the Recycle mode is enabled on the NVR.

Recycle mode

Another place to check is Storage mode setting. The Quota and Group setting will also affect the record. Make sure the remaining space for the channels is still sufficient.

Storage mode settings

2. Network issues

If there is no storage issue on the NVR, the HDD status is all normal, then we move to network part.

2.1 Channel connection status

Please view the Camera Management page and check the status. If it displays , it indicates the status is OK. If it shows , there might be an error. Please make sure the camera is still online, and the login info is still correct.

2.2 Check stream type

Go to Setting-Video Record-Record Settings page and check the record stream type. Make sure the selected stream type is available on the live view page. The same when you check the record on playback page, select the correct stream type to get the record data.

Also check if the stream type is enabled on the camera:

3.1 Check time setting

Please make sure the schedule time and NVR system time can match each other. Otherwise the record will not start correctly.

Record schedule setting

Note:

  • 1. The record schedule is based on the NVR system time.
  • 2. It is suggested to set the NVR and camera to the same time zone. If not there would be time difference in viewing the playback.

3.2 Check the record type

Please make sure the record type in schedule is correct. You can check the color on the right side, each color standing for different record type.

Record type setting

Note: General record contains the Event record. But if you only setup the Event record, the record will only be triggered when the event happens.

3.3 Event record

Milesight NVR supports event record feature. After setting up the event record, the NVR will start to record when an event happens. Here we take the common event motion detection as an example, to see how to make event record work correctly.

Motion detection configuration

Milesight camera

For Milesight camera, itd be easy to setup motion detection on NVR interface. Firstly, please check the Motion detection setting, make sure motion detection is enabled and the detect schedule setting is correct.

Third party camera

For most of third party cameras, the configuration steps are similar to Milesight cameras.

Please try steps above first and check if it could work, please make sure the camera is added via ONVIF protocol.

Sometimes due to the different code framework, some interface might not be matched between NVR and third party camera. Take Hikvision camera for example, the camera can be added successfully via ONVIF protocol.

Hikvision camera is added successfully

However, NVR cannot read its motion detection configuration normally, shown as below picture:

Data match fail

For this situation you can configure the motion detection from camera directly:

Motion detection setting on Hikvision camera

Note: To confirm if the setting is correct and effective, you can check if NVR can receive motion detection notification from the cameras successfully. Go to logs:

Event log

Record schedule

After the motion detection configuration is done, please dont forget to setup the record schedule. We can select Event record or Motion record in this case.
